UCSC's Men's Soccer Outlasts CLU In Overtime

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men's soccer team dropped its first game at home on Sunday afternoon to UC Santa Cruz, 1-0 in overtime. UCSC senior Harry Abraham scored off a Matt Fondy assist just under seven minutes into the first overtime period.

The score came after a CLU shot on goal was blocked and the CLU transition defense fell behind an attacking UCSC front line. Fondy rolled a pass across the front of the 18-yard box to a striding Abraham, who converted a one-on-one opportunity.

Cal Lutheran had plenty of chances with 9-of-16 shots on target and two others hitting a piece of the goal. Chris Estes and Josh Moskowitz took seven attempts combined and were the main offensive threats in Sunday's defeat.

Kingsmen goalkeeper Chris Thompson made five saves and nearly matched the team's season opening streak of 229 scoreless minutes, when UCSC snapped 227 minutes of shutout soccer.

The Banana Slugs managed just one shot on target in the first half, but five of its final six attempts were on goal.

UCSC goalkeeper Jared Wheeler made a match-high nine saves.
