SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Another week, another upset.
Just five days after defeating San Jose State in their preseason finale, the UCSC Men's Soccer team delivered a stunning loss to Division I Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo Friday night, winning 1-0.
Junior Midfielder Josh Lederer scored on a breakaway pass from fellow Junior Midfielder Kevin Anderson from 20 yards away. The goal came in the 59th minute of play.
The Banana Slugs defeated the Mustangs despite being outshot 18-7. Senior Goalkeeper Daniel Chamberlain had 7 saves, including a stop against Cal Poly's Ramon Manak off of a penalty kick.
Cal Poly made a crucial error in the 26th minute, as sophomore midfielder J.J. Young was ejected after a red card. The Mustangs were forced to play the rest of the game with 10 players.
Lederer, who hails from Santa Monica, had 5 goals and 13 points last year.
UCSC (1-0) will face a much easier opponent this Tuesday when they play CSU Monterey Bay in their home opener.
