UCSC bounced back from a 94-54 setback to Menlo College on Friday with a 105-84 victory over College of Holy Names Saturday in Oakland.
The Sea Lions led by only three at halftime, 39-36, but came out smoking in the second half with a 66-point outburst in the 20-minute period. It is the most points they've scored in one half all season.
"In the first half the kids were a little tentative because we only had seven players there," UCSC Coach Joe Richardson said. "But I was satisfied with the win because the kids played well together. They were hitting the open shots and hitting the open man with passes, which is something I like to see."
Four UCSC players reached the 20-point plateau: David Moss with 23, Mike Weaver with 21, Tom Spencer with 20 and Kevin Lynch with 20.
Holy Names' Greg Turner, however, led all players with 42 points. Teammate Andy Fuhrman added 20. UCSC outrebounded Holy Names, 43-35, with Harrod Blank's nine rebounds tops for the Sea Lions.
UCSC hit on 41 of its 68 shots from the floor and 23 of its 34 foul shots. "I'm still not pleased with that," Richardson said of the Sea Lions' free-throw shooting. "We missed too many of them. But other than that, we played well. "It's nice to win one," he added. "We're going to go for two in a row Tuesday night."
UCSC, 6-15 on the season, plays San Jose Bible Tuesday night in San Jose.
