SAN MATEO The team that sleeps together loses together.
On the way to San Mateo, the UCSC men's basketball team discovered firsthand that falling asleep on bus trips may not be conducive to playing a good game. "I looked in the rear-view mirror and the only person I saw who was awake was the stat man," said UCSC Coach Mark Henry, following his team's 83-66 Bay Area Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference setback to College of Notre Dame Saturday night.
"There was no emotion to start the game. There wasn't a sound. It was like being in a morgue."
By halftime, the game was already over, with Notre Dame in the lead, 37-23. It got no better in the second half for UCSC, as Notre Dame hit 20 of 24 shots in the last 20 minutes. "Everything they shot up went in," said Henry. "They're a really patient team," he said. "They are disciplined and well-coached."
UCSC sleep-walked through the first half from the free-throw line, hitting only 7 of 16. "That indicates that we did not come ready to play," said Henry, whose team is 2-1 in conference and
5-9 overall. "They took it to us and they deserved the victory," be said. "They took us out of the game in a hurry. "We're going to try to bounce back from this one. It was certainly not a very good effort on our part. But, we'll keep our heads up."
UCSC, which made 23 of 64 shots for 36 percent (well below UCSC's season average of 47 percent), was led by John Saintignon's 35 points. But most of those were made "after the game was out of control," said Henry.
Hector Duarte led Notre Dame with 20 points. UCSC resumes conference play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Bethany Bible College in Scotts Valley.
