Sea Lions feast on opponent

SANTA CRUZ The biggest scare that UCSC men's basketball coach Mark Henry had Wednesday night was that visiting Holy Names College of Oakland wouldn't show up for its scheduled men's basketball game.
"They haven't showed up the last two years," said Henry. Holy Names showed up, but 15 minutes before the start of the 7:30 p.m. game. The result was to be expected as the Sea Lions romped to a 105-52 non-conference victory. The 61 points scored by UCSC in the first half and its final total were both season-high offensive marks for the Sea Lions. The game also marked the first time this year UCSC has gone over 100 points. UCSC guard John Saintignon, who scored 26 points in less than 15 minutes of play in the first half, topped all scorers with 30 points. Kurt Jaeger scored 15 points and led the Sea Lions in rebounding with seven off the bench, while teammates Tom Buffett, Andy Reinstein and Bruno Baldini each scored 10 points. Felix Garcia and Andy Fermen led Holy Names with 17 and 15 points, respectively. UCSC raised its overall record to 9-10.
There was also some bad news for the Sea Lions. UCSC, which hosts College of Notre Dame Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a key Northern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game, learned Wednesday afternoon that starting 6-foot-8 center Sandro Meallet is academically ineligible for the remainder of the season. "It couldn't come at a worse time," said Henry.
