UCSC dropped its first round game to Stanislaus State Friday 74-14.
" We finally put it all together," said UCSC Coach Shevy Schindler. "We were playing a good defense and the ball just started going in."
Although UCSC trailed at the half to Mills 20-13, UCSC exploded in the second period to score 39 points.
"We had a really good game," Schindler said.
Elaine Rauen led UCSC with 18 points, while teammate Leticia Mendoza chipped in with 12 points and Val McGee grabbed 23 rebounds.
UCSC currently stands at 1-7 for the season.
On Friday, Stanislaus outrebounded UCSC 50-32 and only committed 10 turnovers to 22 for Santa Cruz.
Debbie Mann and Tomasita Alvarado led UCSC with four points apiece in the loss. Four of Santa Cruz's starters missed attending the tournament, which was held during the school's Christmas vacation.
