THOUSAND OAKS, Calif – The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team ended the regular season with a loss to California Lutheran University at a final score of 3-0. UCSC had limited offensive touches throughout the match, so the Banana Slugs were faced with constant pressure on the defensive side of the ball. UCSC ends the 2026 regular season with a 9-4-1 record, including seven wins on the road. Up next, UC Santa Cruz will compete in the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament hosted by Christopher Newport University with games beginning on Thursday, November 5th.
How it Happened
Both UCSC and CLU opened the match with quality shot attempts by the fourth minute of play, with Sharon Alcocer taking the first shot on goal in the game for either squad. Ainsley Gove was challenged early in goal as five shots were taken by the Regals by the 13th minute. The Banana Slugs continued to be pushed on the defensive side of the ball, but it wasn't enough to stop CLU from scoring the first goal of the match in the 16th minute. The Regals continued to make UCSC uncomfortable on the defensive side of the ball, as CLU took another shot on goal immediately following their first score. The Banana Slugs stayed resilient to the best of their ability, but the work for the Regals paid off in the 30th minute to put UCSC down by two goals going into the half. UCSC was limited in offensive possessions throughout the first half as they were shutout in corner kick attempts and limited to only three shots.
The second half opened with both teams trading corner kicks as UC Santa Cruz looked to spark some much needed second half momentum. Gove continued to bring in the saves for her team as she faced constant pressure in goal, including three within a five-minute span. Despite the effort in goal, CLU scored their third and final goal of the game in the 79th minute. UC Santa Cruz couldn't challenge CLU's defense in the same way they were being challenged on their own side of the field and did not get a second half shot attempt in before time expired.
