WHITTIER, Calif – The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team defeated Whittier College in a breezy 3-0 win on Sunday morning and extend their win streak to five in a row. As the Slugs typically demonstrate, all their goals came from different athletes on the pitch with the first coming from Susanaitzel Juarez-Mancera in the first half. Acting as insurance goals, Alexandra Torres and Madeline Puente each found the net in the second half to give UCSC a strong win in their first of two games in an away stand. Ainsley Gove demonstrated her dominance in goal once again, and the shutout win for the Banana Slugs boosts her career total to 11 and her season total to six. Up next, UC Santa Cruz will travel to play California Lutheran University on Tuesday, October 27th at 11:00am. Tuesday's contest will be UCSC's last regular season game before the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament.
UC Santa Cruz was in control from start against the Poets, taking their first shot on goal less than three minutes into the contest by Emily Estrada. The Banana Slugs controlled the tempo of the game early on the offensive side of the ball and held offensive possession majority of the opening minutes as they sought out an opening goal. The work and patience paid off in the 10th minute when Juarez-Mancera slung her ball on an assist from Cassidy Segrell into the net to put UCSC first on the board. UC Santa Cruz continued to put the pressure on the Poets' defense for the remainder of the half with multiple shots on goal to force saves. Whittier's shots on goal were limited, and the attempt on goal in the 38th minute couldn't get past Gove in goal. The half ended with Whittier outshooting UCSC 9-6 on shots, but UCSC had more quality attempts with a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.Â
Sharon Alcocer came out firing in the second half to take a shot in the 49th minute, but this time Whittier came back and forced an early save in goal for Gove just over a minute later. The Poets continued to force UCSC to lock in on defense to keep away a tying goal from coming in. After many back-and-forth possessions UCSC found a way to the net once again, this time with Torres securing a goal on a Kirsten Li assist. Â Just two minutes later, Whittier forced another save for Gove as the Poets were beginning to feel the pressure of the final minutes on their back, so UCSC gave more to worry about as they scored goal number three of the contest. After taking a shot of her own, Li collected her second assist on the day to set Puente up to score her first goal of the season in the 66th minute. Both teams continued to get quality shots late in the match, but neither team could send the ball back into the net for the remainder of the matchup. UCSC ended the contest outshooting Whitter 16-14 in total shots and 8-4 in shot attempts.Â
