
Banana Slugs Fall to No. 20 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team fell to No. 20 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-0 on Thursday night. The Banana Slugs fell behind early in the first half and couldn't find the answer despite heavy second half pressure from the UCSC offense. The Athenas narrowly outshot UCSC 8-7 while the Banana Slugs put five on frame to CMS' four. UC Santa Cruz will stay in Claremont for their next contest against No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

How It Happened
The Athenas pressured the UCSC backline early in the contest, taking two shots in the opening four minutes before connecting with the back of the net in the 13th minute. The Banana Slugs managed to return the pressure with shots on goal in the 30th and 32nd minute but the CMS keeper made two saves to keep the Athenas on top 1-0. After back to back corners, the Athenas managed to keep the pressure on and double their lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute, taking their lead into halftime.
Out of the break, the Banana Slugs turned up the pressure, beginning to pressure the Athenas backline more while holding possession through the midfield. UCSC outshot CMS 5-3 in the second half and had dangerous chances later in the contest. Cassidy Segrell had a shot go wide right in the 75th minute while Sydney Boyd narrowly missed a near sided shot over the crossbar in the 79th minute, Boyd later had another dangerous attempt in the 86th minute, forcing the CMS goalkeeper to make a save, giving the Athenas a 2-0 victory in the end.
