
Slugs Win Five Events to Start C2C Indoor Track and Field Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The UC Santa Cruz men's and women's track and field programs opened the 2025 Coast-to-Coast Indoor Track and Field Championships with three individual men's titles and two individual women's titles to highlight the Day One performances. After six events of competition, the men sit in third with 46 points while the women are in third with 29 points following four events. The Championships will wrap up tomorrow at Christopher Newport.

Men's Highlights
- 60m Prelims: Arthur Gainant turned in the second fastest time of the day, crossing the line in 7.00s to earn a spot in the finals with teammate James Continu joining him in the finals after running a 7.06s race.
- 60m Hurdle Prelims: Sotirios Kougiouris turned in the second fastest time in the 60m hurdles, running an 8.89 second race to advance to tomorrow's finals.
- 5000m: Luke Holland picked up right where he left off after a successful cross country season, earning the victory in the 5k with a time of 15:06.66 to win by over 10 seconds. Sasha Tanasychuk and Camden Hebert took fourth and sixth in the event, crossing the line in 15:27.67 and 15:33.63.
- Distance Medley Relay: The DMR team of Camden Jaureguy, SHiven Karnik, Marcus Fehlman, and Viktor Kieturakis combined for a gold medal time of 10:30.19. Jaureguy split a 3:13.42 in the 1200m leg with Karnik running 51.02s for the 400m leg. Fehlman turned in a 2:02.44 in the 800m section with Kieturakis closing things out in 4:23.29 for the mile anchor leg.
- High Jump: Tetsuo Eng took second overall with a 1.87m jump, finishing as the C2C Runner Up in the event.
- Long Jump: Evan Hofstetter and James Contini took fifth and sixth in the long jump with the duo jumping 6.46m and 6.41m.
- Pole Vault: Evan Hofstetter earned the individual championship in the men's pole vault, clearing 3.76m on his second attempt while the second place finisher from Salisbury cleared the same bar in his third attempt, giving Hofstetter the victory

- 60m Prelims: Amaya Cummins advanced to the finals with the second fastest time of the day, running a 7.87s race while Camille Anneet made her way into the finals with an 8.02s.
- 60m Hurdle Prelims: Isha Kasanagottu earned a spot in the Championship final following a 9.72 second performance.
- 5000m: The Slugs went 1-2 in the 5k as Helena Janku and Jordan Baden were the only two competitors to run sub-18 minute times. Janku led the way, earning the 5k Crown, just months after winning the C2C Women's Cross Country 6k title, crossing the line in 17:56.41 for the 5k. Baden followed closely behind to finish as the runner up, running a 17:57.84.
- Distance Medley Relay: The DMR team of Lucia Muthu, Isha Kasanagottu, Evelyn Ruckmann-Barnes, and Sara Teitelbaum combined for a gold medal time of 12:37.82, winning the event by nearly three seconds. Muthu led off with the 1200m in 3:48.82 with Kasanagottu running 1:06.35 for the 400m leg. Evelyn Ruckmann-Barnes ran 2:25.98 in the 800m with Teitelbaum closing things out in 5:16.65 for the mile.
- Long Jump: Celine Castaneda took sixth overall in the long jump with a 5.10m jump.
- Weight Throw: Whitney Porter took seventh in the weight with a throw of 10.16m.
