
Banana Slugs Earn Four Podium Finishes in Day One of PCSC Championships

MONTEREY PARK, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz men's and women's swim and dive teams had a strong showing in Day One of the 2025 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference, coming away with four podium finishes, four program records, and two NCAA B Cut times. Currently, the men's team sit in first place with 305 points while the women are in third place with 226 points.

Men's Meet Highlights
- 1000 Free: Michael Fusinati earned a third place finish to start the podium finishes for UCSC, touching the wall in 9:30.63, dropping 14.16 seconds from his seed time.
- 200 IM: Asher Kates and Luke Scanlon led the way for UCSC in the event, finishing in fourth and fifth place respectively with times of 1:51.99 and 1:52.08.
- 50 Free: The Slugs earned second and third place finishes out of Andrew Koika and Kyle Reitan in the 50 free with Koika taking second in 20.29s while Reitan took third in 20.46s.
- 800 Free Relay: The Slugs closed out the night with a 6:45.72 in the 800 free relay with Massimo Reyna, Michael Fusinati, Morgan Madril, and Bryson Schmid taking fourth overall.
- 200 Free Relay TT: UC Santa Cruz also swam a 200 free relay time trial as Reitan, Koika, Charlie Hussain, and Adam Sinclair combining for an NCAA B Cut time of 1:20.67, setting a new program record in the process.
- 1m Dive: Charlie Shortt led the way in the 1m dive prelims with 180.75 points while Trevor Masters and Ben Thiem turned in 154.35 and 172.80 points.
Women's Meet Highlights
- 1000 Free: The Slugs saw Honour Dufresne smash to program record in the 1000 free, dropping 20.18 seconds off her seed time to take fourth with a time of 10:27.66 with Piper Strickler taking eighth in 10:36.77.
- 200 IM: Kirsten Boyle took fifth in the 200 IM, breaking the program record after touching the wall in 2:06.20.
- 50 Free: Katy Hawk led the way for UCSC in the 50 free, tying the program record with a time of 24.06 seconds.
- 800 Free Relay: The Banana Slugs ended the night in thrilling fashion with a late push to get on the podium in the 800 free relay. Maddy Gruender, Katy Hawk, Kirsten Boyle, and Terezea Shea combined for an NCAA B Cut time of 7:36.98 to take third in the event.
