THOUSAND OAKS – In a much anticipated rematch, 16th-ranked UC Santa Cruz dropped a 3-0 match to No. 7 St. John Fisher (25-27, 19-25, 20-25) at the Cal-lu-fornia Tournament.
UC Santa Cruz went to 10-8 on the year. The Cardinals improved to 20-2 and avenged a 3-2 Banana Slug victory five weeks ago in Buffalo.
The first set had 16 ties before the Cardinals took the last two points to win and take a 1-0 lead. The second set was close before St. John Fisher took control with a 15-8 run that gave them a 19-11 lead before winning the set by six points.
The Cardinals opened the third set with a 2-0 lead before the Banana Slugs tied it on Riley Norman's kill and a combo block by Ethan Makishima and Dylan Foreman. Four more ties followed in the set before St. John Fisher grabbed a 16-12 lead and forced a UC Santa Cruz timeout. The Banana Slugs got within three (20-17) on consecutive kills from Norman, but two points from the Cardinals put the lead back to five and UC Santa Cruz took their second timeout. The Banana Slugs got to within three again at 23-20 on Leo Tuncer's kill and Norman having an ace and a kill. The Cardinals took the last two points however to finish the match.
Norman finished with a match-high 13 kills on 24 attempts as well as 11 digs. Foreman had eight kills while Tuncer and Kyle Ownbey both had seven. Andrew Pak had 25 assists. The Banana Slugs continue the tournament Friday at noon when they face Baldwin-Wallace.
