
Banana Slugs win 200 Free Relay title on PCSC Day 2

MONTEREY PARK – Another day, another relay championship for UC Santa Cruz.
Thursday at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships, the Banana Slugs won the women's 200-yard Freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.25. It is the second conference title to go with the 800Â relay win on Wednesday. The quartet of Maddy Gruender, Coralie Norenberg, Kaitlyn Armstrong, and Tereza Shea also solidified themselves as contenders for an invite to next month's NCAA Championships. The official announcement will come on Wednesday, February 28th.
Shea and Norenberg also competed in the 50 Freestyle sprint final. Shea, who set the school record of 23.84 in the preliminaries, placed fifth with a time of 24.04. Norenberg placed seventh for the second year in a row, touching the wall in 24:17.
Other highlights on the women's side saw Kirsten Boyle place eighth in the 200-yard Individual Medley in 2:11.11. Nicole Meza won the C final in the same event in 2:09.77 to place 17th. Gruender placed sixth in the 500 Freestyle in 5:05.99, while Honour Dufresne was 17th after winning the C Final in 5:10.20 in the same event.
The men's races saw Massimo Reyna place third (4:36.60) and Michael Fusinati came in sixth in (4:39.73) in the 500 Freestyle. Morgan Madril came in ninth, winning the consolation final by 0.06 seconds with a time of 4:39.86. The 200 Freestyle relay of Kyle Reitan, Bryson Schmid, Charlie Hussain, and Adam Sinclair placed third with a time of 1:22.94. Reitan came in third (20.85), Hussain was fifth (20.99), and Sinclair was 10th (21.99) in the individual 50 Freestyle. Luke Scanlon was fifth in the 200 IM in 1:53.74, with J.J. Stoen placing seventh in 1:55.08. Joel Akey (222.15 points) Andrew Keidel (208.90) and Ford Meyer (148.65) were second, third, and fifth in the 3-meter diving competition. The day finished with the men in first place by five points ahead of Biola and the women in fourth. The championships continue Friday morning.
