Banana Slugs flex academic strength in Fall 2023

UC Santa Cruz Department of Athletics & Recreation posted an outstanding Fall 2023 quarter academically with over 300 student-athletes averaging a 3.56 grade-point average (GPA). That achievement was supported by 67 Banana Slug student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 GPA. 26 Banana Slugs were recognized nationally for academic excellence and superior performance in their sport. These academic achievements will be further recognized at the annual UC Santa Cruz Student-Athlete Awards Show in the form of the "Highest Team GPA" and "Newcomer of the Year" awards.
The Highest Team GPA award is given to the team with the best cumulative GPA of every student-athlete on the team's roster. This award rewards the NCAA teams whose student-athletes consistently perform well academically throughout their UC Santa Cruz careers. The metrics are gathered longitudinally, with the award examining each student-athlete's performance over their entire UC Santa Cruz academic career rather than a single year.
Established in 2019-20, the Newcomer of the Year award honors a male and female first-year student-athlete for their academic achievements and athletic accomplishments. Of the 67 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA, 27 were in their first quarter of attending UC Santa Cruz and are eligible to receive this award.
