Riley Martel-Phillips broke one of the oldest school records on the books, and
Eric Anderson kept pace for Nationals qualification as UC Santa Cruz wrapped up Day Two of the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific.
Cross Country veteran Martel-Phillips had her endurance training pay off as she finished 17th out of 36 in her 5,000 meters heat in a time of 17:17.72. She was 11.46 faster than her previous PR, and 10.5 seconds faster than the previous school record held by Mikayla Murphy since 2009. It placed the senior tops in the West Region and 13th in the entire country.
For the men, Anderson ran in the faster 800m Invite, comprising of 20 different heats with the best Middle Distance runners in the country broken up into between 6 and 10 runners per race. Overall Anderson was 103rd out of over 160 runners. His time of 1:52.01 was his second-fastest of the year.
Other highlights on Friday-
- Holden Spencer was 33rd overall in the men's 800 meters Open, with a time of 1:53.02
- Hanna Hekkanen turned in a PR of 2:18.89 in the women's 800, placing 116th out of 163 runners. It put her in the top ten of the West Region in the event and fourth all-time in program history.
