Late goal lets Holy Names escape over Banana Slugs

HAYWARD- Division II Holy Names scored an 82nd minute goal to edge UC Santa Cruz 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
UC Santa Cruz (1-6-3) lost their third Division II road game this season.
UC Santa Cruz had the better chances in the first half. Forward Luca Bravo had his shot off a corner blocked in the 26th minute. Three minutes before halftime, Will Barba had his attempt off a free kick go high to send both teams to the break scoreless.
The back-and-forth game looked headed for a tie, but HNU's Jehimy Arias cleaned up a scramble and shot from outside the box for the eventual game-winner. Christian Locatelli had the last Banana Slug opportunity, but his attempt off a corner with just over 30 seconds remaining went wide right.
Overall, the Banana Slugs had an 8-7 advantage on shots. Goalkeeper Connor Branson had two saves in his first start of the season. UC Santa Cruz faces another Division II opponent on Tuesday when they play at Fresno Pacific.
