
Swimming closes great weekend with good showing at Bay Area Invite

Men place first, women second in Oakland
OAKLAND - A day after an impressive showing at the Slug Invite, UC Santa Cruz finished their weekend swimming strong at the Bay Area Invite hosted by Mills College.
The men placed first among the four teams participating with 775 points, beating out Southwestern Oregon with 774 points and third-placed Biola's 662 points. The Women were second among seven teams, being edged for first by Cal State East Bay 691-615. In addition to Biola, College of Idaho Southwestern Oregon and host Mills, who were all at Friday's Slug Invite- Azusa Pacific was in attendance and placed third.
The men swept the Backstroke sprints, with Brandon Le and Akira Morita going 1-2 in the 100 in 53.89 and 55.41 respectively. Morita also won the 200 back in 2:00.86, while Le was 3rd in the 50 Free in 22.62, and led off the 400 Medley Relay team with Joseph Guzman, Aaron Wu and Drake Southern that was third in 3:38.39.
Wu won the 100 Butterfly in 52.38, while Guzman and Sam Smith were 2nd and 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke. Guzman finished in 59.50 while Smith touched the wall in 1:02.44.
Adam Shabaan was third in the 1650 Free in 17:00.51.
For the women, the Banana Slugs won the 200 Free Relay, as Isobel Blue, Tereza Shea, Emerald Kwang and Maddy Gruender finished in 1:40.35. That time was 0.82 seconds better than second-placed East Bay and 2.15 seconds from the school record set 25 years ago.
Zoe Gronert was third in the 100 Breastroke in 1:10.38, followed by Quincy Timmerman in fourth (1:11.04) and Mattie Lux in sixth (1:11.4). The Banana Slugs took second through fifth in the 50 Free sprint thanks to Blue (24.81), Kwang (25.11), Shea (25.27), and Gianna Dulong (25.32)
Blue and Kwang went 2-3 in the 100 Free in 54.86 and 54.93, while the 400 Medley Relay team of Elisabeth Lundgren, Megan Deevy, Viviana Raker and Blue placed second in 4:02.86.
UC Santa Cruz have their last meet of the Fall in three weeks when they travel to the La Verne Invite.
