ROCKLIN, CA -
UC Santa Cruz would not let the 99-degree heat faze them, in a fast-paced and physical 3-1 win over William Jessup University.
The Slugs are now 4-4-1 on the season and broke a three-game winless streak. The win was also the 400th in program history since joining the NCAA.
In the first half, scoring was not an issue for the Banana Slugs. Ben Blackfield recorded his second goal of the season, at the 11:27 mar on his first shot of the game, assisted by Keith McCarty. In the 38th minute, Liam Linas set up fellow freshman Jonah Gratol for his first goal of the season, giving UCSC the 2-0 advantage to end the half.
William Jessup turned their anger into aggression going into the second half, scoring in the 56th minute, and taking 12 shots throughout the game to UCSC's nine. However, UCSC had no intention of allowing WJU come back as the ball stayed in the Banana Slugs' possession for the majority of the second half.
With under four minutes to play, Blackfield saw they had an edge and took it, with a perfect look at the goal, assisted by Kailas Dhond to finish the scoring and finally break away from WJU.
UC Santa Cruz will travel to face DII Fresno Pacific this Saturday, at 7p.m.
