UC Santa Cruz stayed undefeated as they closed the 2019 Slugfest with two sweeps against East Coast schools.

The Banana Slugs (4-0) opened the day with a 25-9, 25-11, 25-17 win over Bard College.

UCSC broke open a close Set One with a 13-4 run midway that pushed the lead to 19-8. In Set Two, there were four ties early. With UCSC up 9-7, a block by Isabella Hoglund and Grace Pessagno keyed a 5-0 run to make it 14-7 and take control. Timely hitting and serving staved off any Bard comeback in Set Three as UCSC took the set and match.

UCSC hit .235 in the match and held the Raptors to -.050 hitting. Claire Okerlund led UCSC with 11 kills and 16 digs. Sinead Beaupain had 22 assists and three service aces.

Bard's Maracela Talamantes- older sister of the Slugs' Ysabela- had a team-high six kills.

In the nightcap, the Banana Slugs used strong defense and pinpoint serving to handle Husson in three (25-5, 25-12, 25-12). UCSC outblocked the Eagles 6-1 and served 15 aces to Husson's one, with Okerlund and Cassie Nickel each having four aces. Okerlund added a team-high 10 kills, while Alexandria Everett hit .692 with nine kills on 13 swings with no errors.

The Banana Slugs return to action next weekend at the Cal-Lu-fornia Invite in Thousand Oaks, starting Friday at noon against fifth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
