TURLOCK (10-24)- UC Santa Cruz held on against Division II Stanislaus State in the first half, but the Warriors scored three of the four goals in a wild second half to win the non-conference game 3-1 Thursday night.
Goalie Alyssa Diaz-Tucker was busy in the first half, starting in the 7th minute. Facing a Stanislaus 2-on-1, she had a kick-save from short range leading to a corner. She finished with six saves total in the first half as the Banana Slugs held the Warriors scoreless.
Stanislaus got on the board in the 53rd minute when Ilena Rivera pounced on a rebound after a blocked shot. Rivera scored another on her next shot just under eight minutes later to make it 2-0 for the hosts with 30 minutes to play.
However, UCSC started to build possession after the second goal. After a hard foul, the Slugs got a free kick and threatened with a scramble in the Stanislaus box before it was kicked away for a corner. That allowed freshman Julia Hernandez to curl it in tight with her right foot and score directly off the kick. The goal made it 2-1 with 19 minutes to play.
However, Stanislaus restored the two-goal advantage in the 77th minute to account for the final score. Diaz-Tucker had one more save in the final minute to finish with eight on the night. Overall, Stanislaus had a 7-3 advantage on corners.
UC Santa Cruz (9-3-2) returns home for the rest of the regular season, starting Saturday afternoon at 2pm against St. Katherine.
