Box Score ORANGE, Cali - In their season opener, the UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team fell to Chapman University 2-1 on Thursday night.
Looking for their first win in Orange County since 2009, the Slugs outshot the hosts 13-10 but could not overcome two Chapman goals over a 14-minute span in the second half.
After Chapman's Rachel Lustig got the Panthers on the board in the 74th minute, the Slugs went on the attack again. The Slugs had two good looks three minutes later, but Cayce Shaw had her shot blocked and Sandra Parhami's follow-up was saved by Chapman's goalie.
Lustig completed the hosts' scoring when she knocked in a corner with 3:35 left. The Slugs pressed again, and their attacking paid off :16 seconds after the restart when Shaw knocked in a goal to get UCSC on the board. It was Shaw's first career goal.
The Banana Slugs regroup with a game at Pomona-Pitzer Friday evening.
