Banana Slugs Get Past Warriors on Senior Day

SANTA CRUZ (9-30) – In the final home match for four seniors of the women's program, it proved to be the younger players that played the difference as the Banana Slugs defeated NAIA opponent William Jessup University 4-1 at Lower East Field.
Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 2-1 on Saturday in Santa Cruz while the Warriors lost 2-1 to Vanguard in Rocklin also on Saturday.
In the high-scoring first half, the Warriors started the scoring with 37:42 remaining in the half on a Yvette Perez tap in off the goalpost to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Warriors. The Banana Slugs were quick to respond as seven minutes of clock time later Claire Lim would score on a penalty quick to tie the match at 1-1. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good with 24:44 left in the half on a Megan Carey blast to the right side of the goal from about fifteen yards out to give the Banana Slugs a 2-1 lead. Neither team would hit the back of the net before the halftime intermission as the Banana Slugs led 2-1 at the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs would face thirteen second half shots by the Warriors but Athena Del Rosario had six saves in the half to keep the game in the Banana Slugs' favor. With 15:05 remaining in the match, Alex Arce scored an insurance goal off cleaning up a missed clearance to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Banana Slugs. Gabby Powell of the Banana Slugs would add the final tally with 7:51 remaining to make the score 4-1. The Banana Slugs won the match 4-1.
Four players (Carey, Lim, Powell and Cayce Shaw) all had two shots for the Banana Slugs and Perez had a match high six shots for the Cyclones. The win for the match went to Selina Davila Olivera for the Banana Slugs and the loss went to Alison Marlow for William Jessup. William Jessup had a 16-10 advantage in shots and had a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Banana Slugs will now have nine days before their next match. The next match for the Banana Slugs is Friday October 9th as they take on NCAA Division II opponent Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park. Kickoff is set for 12:30 pm.
