UCSC gets first shutout of year in 0-0 tie

Box Score

In their home opener, the Banana Slugs used a concerted defensive effort to gain a 0-0 draw against LaVerne to end the first day of the 2015 Slugfest Tournament. The tie broke UC Santa Cruz's three-game losing streak.

"It was our goal to remain organized and not give up a goal. We fought 110 minutes not to do so and succeeded," said head coach Emily Scheese.

"Now we need to tuck one away."

Junior Selina Davila-Olivera had six saves in getting her first career shutout.

"Selina kept a clean sheet & made some big saves, and the team took the first step to taking care of a team result," Scheese said.

While Davila-Olivera made several huge saves, the defensive line that played the entire game (Claire Lim, Ryann Miguel Emma Whitwell and Rika Goto) stayed on the Leopards and blocked or redirected several shots.

"Despite the tie, the team collective effort to keep the shutout be vigilant and not fall victim to a mental lapse was huge for us" said Scheese.

It was a turnaround from last week where the Slugs fell 3-1 at LaVerne, allowing three goals in the first half.

Emily Vanasse had UCSC's best chances, hitting the woodwork twice, once in each half.

UCSC gets a day to rest before finishing Slugfest Sunday afternoon against Pacific.
