#23 Banana Slugs Fall to #13 Missionaries

WALLA WALLA, WA -- UC Santa Cruz started their two day trip to the state of Washington as they took ITA #13 Whitman College. The Banana Slugs fell to the Missionaries 8-1.
Both teams were coming off victories in their last match. The Banana Slugs won 8-1 over Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Cruz last Friday while the Missionaries defeated ITA #18 University of Texas-Tyler 8-1 earlier today in Walla Walla.
The Missionaries won each singles match. Colton Malesovas of Whitman defeated Max Littlejohn of UC Santa Cruz 6-3, 6-4. Zach Hewlin of Whitman defeated Chad Stone of UC Santa Cruz 6-3, 6-3. Phillip Locklear of Whitman defeated Sean Hollister of UC Santa Cruz 7-5, 6-0. Petar Jivkov of Whitman defeated Kyle Richter of UC Santa Cruz 6-2, 6-3. Chase Friedman of Whitman won his first set with Alexander Flora of UC Santa Cruz and Flora retired while he was down 3-1 in the second set. The tightest singles match was between Jake Hoeger of Whitman and Jimmy Soper of UC Santa Cruz. Hoeger won the first set 6-3 and Soper won the second set 6-2. In the match point, Hoeger won 10-1 to win the match 2-1.
In the doubles competition, the Missionaries won two matches and the Banana Slugs won one match. The Banana Slugs' team of Littlejohn and Richter defeated the Missionaries team of Hewlin and Hoeger 8-6. Whitman's team of Locklear and James Rivers defeated Hollister and Chetan Munugala of UC Santa Cruz 8-3. In the #3 doubles match, the Whitman team of Jivkov and Malesovas defeated the UC Santa Cruz team of Flora and Soper 8-5

The Banana Slugs will have two matches tomorrow in Walla Walla. Their first match is against University of Texas-Tyler at noon and their second match is against University of Redlands is at 3 pm.
