Vikings Blank Banana Slugs

CHICAGO (10-16) – UC Santa Cruz started a two match trip to the Land of Lincoln as they took North Park University in Chicago. The hosts were unkind to their visitors from California as the Vikings won 3-0 over the Banana Slugs.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost to NCAA Division II member Stanislaus State University in Turlock on Wednesday while the Vikings won 6-2 over Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday in Chicago.
In the first half, the Vikings scored their first goal of the match on a Gianfranco DeCarne shot to the bottom center with 32:53 left in the half. The Vikings added another goal on a Carel Kawele Kuzona header with 16:57 left in the half to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Matthew Rutledge had a shot at the net before the end of the half for the Banana Slugs but the shot went just wide. The Vikings led at the half 2-0.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs played the half mostly in their offensive zone. However, Chris Tomuta of the Vikings had three saves on the half. With 16:41 left in the match, the Vikings would add their final goal of the match on a Nikolay Ianev shot to the bottom left to make the score 3-0. Ryan Nyberg would have a shot on the frame before the end of the match. However, the shot was saved. The Vikings won the match 3-0.
Three players (Shawn Dirocco, Nyberg and Rutledge) each had two shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for North Park, DeCarne had a match high six shots. Tomuta got the win for the Vikings while Christian Deguzman got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Vikings outshot the Banana Slugs 18-12 while the Banana Slugs had one more corner kick (6-5) than did the Vikings.
The Banana Slugs' next match is Sunday as they take on North Central College in Naperville. Kickoff is set for 11 am.
