Lady Slugs Dig Deep to Overpower Chapman 3-1 on Senior Day

Ranked 1st in the West, the UC Santa Cruz Lady Slugs drew a large supportive crowd for one of their toughest challenges of the season versus Chapman University. The Slugs and Panthers battled it out with over 30 fouls called in the match, but it was UCSC who overpowered Chapman to improve to an overall record of 14-0-3.

The UCSC defensive unit, who is currently ranked 2nd in the Nation for Goals-Against Average, had not allowed a goal in over 447 minutes entering today's match-up. With five minutes left in the 1st half, a Chapman midfielder riffled a shot from about 30 yards out which was tipped over the crossbar by keeper Katie Loomis. After UCSC miss cleared the corner kick, the ball squeaked into the box behind the defensive line. Chapman Miranda Loflin ran onto the ball, hammering it past Loomis to put in the first goal of the match.

UC Santa Cruz did not crack under the pressure. The Lady Slugs came out fired up in the second half, playing their best soccer yet with great composure and stealth. In the 55th minute, Freshman Katie Hayden collected a loose ball along the left sideline in Chapman's defensive third. She cut the ball to her right foot and ripped a great strike to the far post. After a deflection by a Chapman defender, Annick Lamb tried to volley the ball in but it hit the left post. Forward Danielle Mullen was crashing the net and hammered the ball in to tie the game up 1-1. Leading scorer Annick Lamb put in her 16th goal of the season after an unbelievable effort and assist by Jackie Belton, for the go-ahead goal in the 58th minute.
Wendy Funk wrapped up the scoring with a powerful shot in the 73rd minute. Junior keeper Katie Loomis, who is currently ranked 1st in the Nation for Saves Percentage, came up with two key saves to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard in the 2nd half of play.

This was also a special day for the UCSC Women's Soccer program as they honored their sole senior for the 2006 season – Monica Lee. Her work ethic has been a true inspiration to the team and her leadership as a captain this year has been instrumental to their success. UC Santa Cruz looks to remain undefeated as they play their final game of the regular season this Saturday, November 4th on the road versus Cal State East Bay – Hayward.
