Women's Soccer breaks out of slump; beats #2 Willamette in OT

SANTA CRUZ -- The UCSC Women's Soccer team broke out of its two-game losing streak on Sunday, shocking Willamette University 2-1 in overtime.

Freshman Defender Courtney Frick scored both goals for UCSC; the first just 4 minutes into the game, the second in the 7th minute of overtime to give UCSC the victory.

Willamette had not only been ranked #1 in the western region, they came in ranked #2 in the country.

UCSC outshot Willamette 16-7, and Senior Goalkeeper Janice Loper had 5 saves as UCSC dominated most of the way. Frick's overtime goal came off of a corner kick by Sophomore Defender Leah Smith.

After opening their season with five consecutive wins, UCSC had lost its last two matches to Linfield and Westmont.

But the Lady Slugs turned it around against the Bear Cats of Willamette, who had entered Sunday's match undefeated.

The team's record now stands at 6-2. They play their next match on Monday against Chapman. Game time is set at 11 AM.
