SAN ANTONIO, TX – The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team played a high-scoring contest against Trinity University that ended in a back-and-forth 3-3 tie. UC Santa Cruz led by one at halftime thanks to goals from Erik Moreno Herrera and Aidan Dellinger, and Luke Williams sent in the third goal early in the second to give the Slugs a two-score lead. As Trinity began to ramp up the pressure, the Banana Slugs started to show lapses in their defense to allow the Tigers to bring the game to a tie. Tobias Jacobson-Bell led the Banana Slugs defensively in goal, collecting three saves in the contest with multiple touches on the ball in addition to his recorded saves. The Banana Slugs will close out their weekend in San Antonio on Sunday, Sept. 27th against Texas Lutheran University.

How It Happened:
UC Santa Cruz fired out the first shot of the match by Moreno Herrera during the 8th minute of the first half as the teams opened the game each trying to find defensive gaps on their opponent. The Banana Slugs and the Tigers set the tone of physicality early as each team gathered multiple fouls early in the match. UCSC lost a ball in their defensive half of the field, leading to a charged play in critical territory for Trinity. The Tigers took advantage of the Banana Slug scramble to score the first goal of the match on their first shot in the 14th minute of play. UC Santa Cruz struggled to string together offensive plays after the Tiger's goal and spent ample time on the defensive end until things began to click on offense. The Slugs eventually found their gap and charged ahead on a breakaway run that played into their first goal of the match by Moreno Herrera in the 24th minute. The charge continued when Trinity gave up a ball about 10 yards from the box, and Dellinger weaved between two Tigers to shoot in the second goal for UC Santa Cruz and finish the half with a one score lead.

Half two opened with aggressive efforts from Trinity, but UCSC continued to defend the Tigers well as they did in the opening half, and Jacobson-Bell remained clutch in the goal in during the defensive plays. The Banana Slugs successfully defended shots and free kick opportunities from the Tigers, instilling second-half confidence for the UCSC team that translated to taking more offensive chances. The chances paid off when Williams put a ball away into the net for UCSC to give the Banana Slugs a two-goal lead. After gaining a comfortable lead, the Banana Slugs took their foot off the gas just under three minutes later to bring Trinity back into the contest and cut the lead for UCSC to one. The Tigers struck again on a defensive miscommunication from UC Santa Cruz, and brought the Slugs to a tie as the final minutes started to count down. The game began to get scrappy as each team was fighting to come out on top, and both the Slugs and the Tigers put together late shots on goal, but neither team could get their fourth goal to hit the net. UCSC led the match 12-9 in shots, taking only one corner kick in the evening.
