LOS ANGELES, Calif – The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team conquered Occidental College 5-0 in an early Sunday morning matchup. Today's win lifts UCSC's win streak up to three, and their overall record to 7-3-1 as the postseason draws near in the coming weeks. The Banana Slugs dominated the contest with first-half goals coming from Sharon Alcocer and Jade Jones. The Slugs continued to topple the Tigers in the second half with another score from Alcocer followed by Emilie Brack and Caroline Alanis adding to the goal party. Alcocer leads the Banana Slugs with five goals this season and continues a strong string of contests after being named the Coast-to-Coast women's soccer offensive athlete of the week for week five. Jones' goal gives her back-to-back goal-scoring matches, which account for her two total goals scored on the year. Brack's goal total is boosted up to three on the year with Alanis now up to two. Ainsley Gove showcased a perfect day in goal with three saves, bringing her season shutouts up to four. Gove now holds the sixth most career shutouts in UC Santa Cruz women's soccer history with nine. Up next, UC Santa Cruz will travel to Azusa Pacific University to face to Cougars on Tuesday, October 13th at 11:00AM.
How it Happened:
Just over two minutes into the contest in their initial possession, UC Santa Cruz struck first courtesy of Alcocer. Sent into play by Susanaitzel Juarez-Mancera, the Occidental goalie misread the speed of the ball which allowed Alcocer to sneak in front and steal the ball for an open-net goal. UCSC remained with majority possession following the goal, pressing many shots and corner kicks onto the Tiger's defense. In their push to score, the Banana Slugs executed another attack in the 26th minute when Erin Freeman sent a cross-goal pass past Amelia Fung to decoy the defense, and instead to Jones to net the second goal for UCSC. Both teams continued to fire shots as each goalie tallied saves to end the half, ending the first 45 at 2-0 in favor of the Banana Slugs. UC Santa Cruz outshot the Tigers 11-4 in total and 6-1 in shots on goal to lead the first half.
The second half showcased anything but the slugs slowing down. Alcocer came out firing once again in the second half of action and dialed in her second goal of the day less than five minutes into the half. Her speed on a breakaway could not be contained, and her touch inside the box neatly placed her ball past the goalie. UC Santa Cruz mixed substitutions in the meantime as they looked to find the perfect recipe for goal number four. Brack came to the rescue in what seemed like a broken offensive possession for UCSC and soared in a ball from downtown in a shot that shocked the Tiger's defense in the 70th minute. The final net of the contest came on a beautifully passed ball from Madeline Puente, setting up Alanis to cap off scores for the Banana Slugs. UC Santa Cruz outshot Occidental 20-8 in total shots and 11-3 in shots on goal.
