
Lim and Espy Drop 17 as Slugs Defeat Regent

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The UC Santa Cruz men's basketball team earned a 78-67 victory over Regent University on Friday evening, improving to 13-8 on the year. Joseph Espy and Ben Lim both dropped 17 points with Espy recording his eighth double double with 11 boards while Lim grabbed six. The Banana Slugs will get a day off before taking on the No. 3 Mary Washington Eagles on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. PT.

How It Happened
The Banana Slugs struck first and never looked back as Ben Lim hit a jumper for the games first basket to spark a quick 9-3 run for UCSC. Regent closed the gap to 14-13 and later took an 18-17 lead before a Ben Lim dunk put UCSC back on top at 21-20. From there, UCSC outscored Regent 16-8 to close out the half with Jaden Gamez hitting a three right before the buzzer to send the Slugs with momentum and a 37-29 lead.

Regent hit the first shot out of the break, going on an 8-5 run to close the gap to 42-37 with 16:54 remaining. The two teams traded shots from downtown before Regent made a run to cut the lead to three points at 48-45. Miles Burrows went on a solo 5-0 with Leo Wagner adding two to put UCSC back up by double digits at 55-45 with 12:19 to play. Regent continued to fight back as they pulled within four points at 57-53 but the Banana Slugs played well down the stretch, working back to a double digit lead at 75-62 following an 18-9 advantage in scoring. Regent would narrowly outscore UCSC 5-3 the rest of the way but it was too little too late as the Slugs earned the 78-67 victory.
