The UC Santa Cruz women's cross country team battled their way to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in a grueling NCAA West Region Championship. The Banana Slugs squared off with some of the nation's top teams while fighting through a flooded course and torrential downpours, making it one of the most challenging races in the country this season. Despite the conditions, UC Santa Cruz performed well, placing five runners in the top 50 with Elena Stanciu, Helena Janku, and Kenzie Seymour all earning All-Region honors with top 35 finishes. Elena Stanciu led the charge with a fifth place finish in 21:49.5 after winning the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship crown just two weeks ago. Helena Janku and Kenzie Seymour turned in 17th and 35th place finishes, respectively, with Janku crossing in 22:42.7 while Seymour finished the race in 23:09.1. Emma Wirz and Ryanne Reynolds rounded out the top five with 46th and 48th place finishes with the duo running 23:26.7 and 23:34.5. Notably, this will be the fourth appearance at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship for the UC Santa Cruz women's team, marking their fourth consecutive trip to the final race of the season. In addition to that, Helena Janku will now make her fourth trip to NCAAs as well, making her the first four-time NCAA qualifier in program history. Janku's efforts across her career have earned NCAA Championship races in Lansing, Michigan, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Terre Haute, Indiana, and now Spartanburg, South Carolina. The senior standout has placed as high as 82nd individually but was a key member of last year's squad who helped lead the team to their highest finish at the NCAA Championships, coming away with a 19th place finish in Indiana.
Â
Luke Holland and Camden Jaureguy will make individual appearances at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this year after the duo led the way for UC Santa Cruz all season. Most notably, the duo went 1-2 at the C2C Conference Championships with Luke Holland winning his second straight individual title in 24:12.3 while Camden Jaureguy finished as the runner up in 24:38.7. At the NCAA Division III West Region Championships in Claremont, Ca., Holland and Jaureguy led the Slugs once again as they fought through the rainy and muddy course to take home All-Region honors. Holland led the charge with a fourth place finish to secure his spot at the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row, crossing the line in 25:00.9 while Jaureguy took 12th place, finishing in 25:33.7 to secure a spot at this year's Championship to make his NCAA debut.
