Banana Slugs Tight Hard Fought Battles with Top-10 Foes

NEW YORK, NY - The UC Santa Cruz women's volleyball team played four close sets against No. 2 John Hopkins University, but lost to the Blue Jays 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23). However, the Slugs fought hard with standouts from the game, including Ashley Magley leading the Banana Slugs with 15 Kills, Michaela Augustine having 20 assists, and Anna Hospodar and Abigail Lee having 10 digs a piece. UCSC took one set against the NYU Bobcats, closing out their time in NYC (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 25-15). Kelly Ann Greene led the team with 15 kills, which is her personal best so far this season. Olly Gordon had seven blocks, and Michaela Augustine aided the team with 21 assists.

UC Santa Cruz started the game off strong, scoring the first 4 points of set one before the Blue Jays scored three points to bring the game to 4-3. The Slugs maintained the lead and, at 8-7, pulled further ahead, scoring eight points for John Hopkins' one, with three of the kills coming from Olly Gordon, landing UC Santa Cruz in a 16-8 lead. The two teams proceed to trade points back and forth, with John Hopkins shrinking the gap. With the Slugs at 24-18, the Blue Jays gave one final push and scored four points before Olly Gordon landed the set-ending kill for a 25-22 finish over the No. 2 team in the country. 

Sets two, three, and four were neck and neck, but the Blue Jays managed to win all three (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) despite the Banana Slug's best efforts. Both teams fought for each set of trading points until the very end. UC Santa Cruz had a 6-1 lead at the beginning of set three with kills from Ashley Magley and aces from Anna Hospodar. The Slugs maintained the lead up until 21-19, when John Hopkins closed the gap and took the lead, securing the win.  In set four, both teams had runs of points, with the Slugs scoring five consecutively, shrinking the Blue Jays lead to 17-15. However, in the end, John Hopkins won each set, securing the match win.

Set one was back and forth with both teams being in the lead throughout the game, however when the Slugs held the lead at 15-13, the Bobcats managed to score nine points, with Santa Cruz only scoring one, putting the Banana Slugs in a 16-21 deficit they couldn't return from, ending the set 25-21. Set two, NYU got an early lead, and despite kills from Heidi Collins, Ashley Magley, Kelly Ann Greene, and others, the Banana Slugs lost the set two 25-21. 

Set three was UC Santa Cruz's best round, scoring a 25-18 win. With an early 4-1 lead and consistent points throughout the game, the Slugs fought back against the Bobcats. At 19-17, the Banana Slugs kicked it into top gear and scored six consecutive points with aces from Anna Hospodar and kills from Kelly Ann Greene and Ashley Magley, bringing the game to 24-17 before Greene ended the set with a kill for a 25-18 win.

Set four wrapped up quickly for the Slugs, with NYU getting an early 6-3 lead. Despite UC Santa Cruz's best effort, the Bobcats proved to be too much, winning the game with a 25-15 last set.
