Slugs Sweep the Red Hawks in 2024 Home Opener

SANTA CRUZ, CA- The UC Santa Cruz women's volleyball team swept on their home court with a 3-0 game (25-13, 25-14, 25-15) against Simpson University. Kelly Ann Greene scored ten kills, with Margo Melgoza racking up 13 assists. Overall, it was a strong home opener for the Slugs.

UC Santa Cruz started the first set strong, scoring six points to the Simpson Red Hawk's one. The Slugs maintained the lead with kills from Ashley Magley and blocks by Drew Bryant. At 12-6, UC Santa Cruz scored another five consecutive points, widening the gap to 16-6. At 17-8, Margo Melgoza served an ace, continuing the forward momentum. The first set wrapped up quickly, with Simpson only scoring 13 points to UC Santa Cruz's 25. 

Set two started with trades from both teams, tying the game up at 4-4. Simpson managed to score two points, pulling into the lead before the Slugs quickly caught up and surpassed the Red Hawks. UC Santa Cruz went on a nine-point streak, with a kill from Audrey Gilbert and another ace from Margo Melgoza. While the Red Hawks tried to stay in the game, trading points here and there, they could not return from UC Santa Cruz's early game streak. Kills from Kelly Ann Greene and Ashley Magley secured the set two win for the Slugs with a 25-14 finish.

Right off the bat, UC Santa Cruz scored nine consecutive points, with three aces from Audrey Gilbert for a 9-0 start of the third set. Simpson traded points with the Slugs but only managed to score two consecutive points at 12-18. UC Santa Cruz continued to dominate with a quick five points to push the game to 23-12. The Red Hawks scored three more points, but the Slugs kept their hold on the game, ending the match 25-15.
