THOUSAND OAKS—UC Santa Cruz women's volleyball got a small measure of revenge in two wins to close out the Cal-Lu-fornia Invitational on Saturday. The Banana Slugs beat Chapman 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22) in the morning, avenging one of their losses last week. They then swept UT-Dallas- the team who eliminated them from last year's NCAA playoffs- 25-18, 25-19, 25-18.
The Banana Slugs are now 10-5 on the year.
MATCH ONE
Against Chapman, the first set had the teams exchanging runs throughout. UC Santa Cruz took an 8-4 lead after a 5-0 run which forced Chapman to use a timeout. The Panthers later had a 7-1 run that tied it at 15-all, before the Banana Slugs finished the set on a 10-3 run with
Kate Lau's ace delivering set point.
With Chapman leading 20-12 in the second set, a 6-2 run by the Banana Slugs got them to within 20-23. A pair of kills by
Peyton Tazelaar and a combo block by
Olly Gordon and
Sydney Ahrendt tied it at 23-all, but a kill and a service ace by the Panthers ended the comeback and gave Chapman the set.
The third set was tied 8-8 before UC Santa Cruz outscored Chapman 17-6 the rest of the way. The fourth set was also close, but with the score tied at 19-all, UC Santa Cruz outscored Chapman 6-3 to win, highlighted by two more combo blocks from Ahrendt and Gordon.
UC Santa Cruz hit .257 in the match. Tazelaar had 11 kills and 15 digs.
Kelly Ann Greene added 10 kills, and Gordon had eight with six total blocks.
Sydney May had 21 assists and two aces.
MATCH TWO
The first set had eleven ties before the Banana Slugs took the lead for good on a 5-0 run that had three aces by Alexandra Ponzo. The Banana Slugs never trailed in the second set, finishing on a pair of kills by Greene. The Banana Slugs trailed 7-4 in the third until Lau's kill started a 6-0 run that gave them the lead at 10-7. UC Santa Cruz then kept the Comets from getting back in the match, with
Ashley Magley finishing the set's longest rally with a kill that made it 18-13 and forcing a UT-Dallas time out. Gordon's kill down the middle finished the set and the match.
UC Santa Cruz hit .214 for the match and held the Comets to .088. Greene and Gordon each had eight kills to lead the offense. Ponzo finished with 18 assists and 4 aces, while May had 14 assists and 10 digs.
Emily Pasion finished with 18 digs as she passed All-American and former teammate Claire Okerlund for seventh place on the school's career dig chart.
UC Santa Cruz next has a roadtrip to Massachusetts, starting with 19
th-ranked Tufts on Thursday.
