First half goals by Chelyn Ackerman and Amanda Scott and a superb defensive performance gave UC Santa Cruz a 2-0 win over The Master's on Saturday afternoon.
The Banana Slugs (2-2-2) won their first home game of the season after playing five away games in twelve days to open the year.
Ackerman opened scoring after ten minutes with a header from Camille Anneet's cross. Six and a half minutes later, Scott got her first goal of the year on a 20-yard shot to the net's top right corner.
"We were able to play from the back and switched the ball. We played really well and I'm really proud of our team today," said Scott after the game.
Makenna Curtis had five saves to get the shutout. Overall, the Banana Slugs had a 14-9 shot advantage over the Mustangs. Nineteen Banana Slugs got to see the field, including the college debuts of Kathleen Byambasuren and Rylie Van Kleek.
"We have 14 newcomers this year and that's half the team," said Scott. "I'm proud of every single one of them. They are great examples of Banana Slugs and I'm glad a lot of them saw the field today."
UC Santa Cruz plays another NAIA school next when they face William Jessup Wednesday September 20th at the Lower East Field.
