Men's tennis pushes 16th-ranked Caltech to limit in 6-3 loss

PASADENA - No. 39 UC Santa Cruz opened their three-match roadtrip with a 6-3 loss to 16th-ranked Caltech.

The duo of Sam Hall and Andre Mardirossian opened the Dual with an 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. However, the Beavers pulled out the next two matches to have a 2-1 lead going into Singles. Straight-set victories by Praneet Varade and Hall tied the match at 3-3. After the Beavers won another to take a 4-3 lead, the last two matches went extra. Lucas Chen forced long rallies from Caltech's Kyle McCandless, the 19th-ranked player in the West Region. McCandless however came back to win 6-4, 6-4. The final match at No. 2 Singles also went long before Ishaan Kannan edged Mardirossian 6-1, 1-6, 4-6.

UC Santa Cruz (2-2) continues the Los Angeles excursion with a matchup at ninth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.
