Box Score 2 CLAREMONT- UC Santa Cruz opened the 2022 season splitting their first two matches at the Pacific Coast Classic. The Banana Slugs dropped their first match to hosts and second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before dispatching Chapman.
The Banana Slugs played the Athenas close early but could not keep pace in dropping the first match 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 13-25).
Samantha Taylor had a team-high six kills and two service aces, while
Emily Pasion had a career-high 15 digs.
In the second match, UC Santa Cruz dropped a close first set, but rallied and hit .346 the rest of the way in beating Chapman 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20).
Taylor finished with a career-high 21 kills, while
Sydney Ahrendt and
Audrey Gilbert added 10 kills each. Pasion had team-highs of 15 digs and 4 aces. Setters
Lauren Bliss and
Sinead Beaupain each had 25 assists as Beaupain went over 1,000 assists in her career. Overall, UC Santa Cruz had 14 aces in the match and hit .289.
The Banana Slugs (1-1) conclude the Classic on Saturday with a match against Redlands in the morning before facing Cal Lutheran in the afternoon.
