Banana Slugs dominate stat sheet but come up short against Division II foes
TURLOCK- Host Stanislaus State had a pair of first half goals and scored one more in the second half to hold off a spirited UC Santa Cruz team 3-0.
The Banana Slugs fell to 1-4-3 on the year.The game ended a five-match road swing for UC Santa Cruz, bookended by Division II opponents.
Stanislaus State opened scoring in the 9th minute and then had a successful penalty in the 26th minute. The Warriors led 2-0 at the half despite the Banana Slugs having an 8-3 edge in shots. UC Santa Cruz came out roaring after halftime looking for a goal, and it almost paid off 53 seconds after the restart, but Rory Monninger's shot was saved. UC Santa Cruz had two good chances in the 54th and 55th minute, but both Paolo Santiago and Monninger had their shots stopped. After the hosts added another goal, Caleb Lee had the last good chance for the Banana Slugs in the 88th minute, but his attempt went over the bar.
Overall, UC Santa Cruz had a 17-7 shot advantage over the Warriors. It was the most shot attempts by UC Santa Cruz this season. Monninger and Itay Rabinovich had three shots each to lead the Banana Slugs, who return to the friendly confines of the Lower East Field on Saturday afternoon when they face Whittier College at 1:00pm.
