Second half goals allow Sagehens to escape with result
The UC Santa Cruz women's soccer team had the lead at halftime, but two second half goals were the difference in a 2-1 loss to Pomona-Pitzer.
UC Santa Cruz dropped their first game of the year to go to 2-1-1. The 24th-ranked Sagehens improve to 3-0.
The Banana Slugs weathered an early barrage before taking the lead 7:31 before halftime. Kayla Alexander had her shot saved at the top of the box, but Bronwyn Eyre chased down the rebound and let loose a floater that cleared Pomona's defense and settled in the net. It was the sophomore midfielder's second goal of the season.
The second half went at a fast pace, with the Sagehens finally breaking down the UC Santa Cruz defense in the 69th minute for their equalizer. The Banana Slugs had a couple of chances at a game-winner. In the 85th minute, Amanda Scott got open in the box but her shot went wide. Two minutes later, Julia Hernandez sent her 25-yard free kick wide of the post.
With a tie looming, the Sagehens had one more break, and it paid off when they pounced on a rebound with under 40 seconds left for the eventual game-winner. Banana Slug First Year Tatiana Fernandez had a chance at the equalizer, but her shot with under 20 seconds left could not get on frame, and Pomona-Pitzer cleared out the ball to eat up the remaining time.
The Sagehens finished with a 28-9 shot advantage. Goalkeeper Amelia Brown had a season-high seven saves. UC Santa Cruz open a four-game roadtrip in a week's time when they play at Menlo College Saturday afternoon.
