Angela Bradbury headed home a free-kick with nine seconds left as UC Santa Cruz pulled off an exciting 2-1 comeback win over Redlands Saturday afternoon.
UC Santa Cruz improved to 6-2-2 with the win. It was the Banana Slugs' first victory over the Bulldogs (5-6) in six games dating back to 2012.
"Getting a goal in the last ten seconds for the win? Nothing better," Bradbury said after her first goal of the season.
The Bulldogs took an early lead in the 14th minute on a tap-in from close range. The Banana Slugs' best chance came in the 27th minute when Kristi Truong had two attempts inside the box. Her first was blocked and her followup was saved by Redlands goalkeeper Courtney Stewart.
Karina Bulli had her 44th minute shot go wide as the Bulldogs led at halftime.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs kept pressing for the equalizer, and Tatiana Fernandez finally got the Banana Slugs on the board in the 73rd minute. She took a short pass from Kayla Alexander and curled in a left-footer from outside the box to the top of the net for her second goal of the year. The Bulldogs had a chance with under 55 seconds left but sent the shot high. The Banana Slugs raced to get the last shot, but Redlands committed a foul with 13 seconds left that drew a yellow card, setting up the last chance for UC Santa Cruz. Midfielder Julia Hernandez lined up a perfect thirty-yard kick that found Bradbury in the box for the game winner.
"I knew Julia could get a great ball to the back post, so I was so ready to just go for the ball and attack it," Bradbury said.
The Banana Slugs finished with a 17-10 shot advantage and both teams had 4 corners each. UC Santa Cruz next will travel to play Division II Dominican Wednesday afternoon.
