SANTA CRUZ (12-29) – Playing their second-straight ranked opponent, UC Santa Cruz played their fourth game of a five-game homestand as they hosted Tufts University at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The No. 14 Jumbos outscored the Banana Slugs by 17 in the third quarter en route to a 75-47 victory.
In the first quarter, the two teams would trade baskets back and forth through the entire quarter. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the quarter at 12-11 on a
Kaylee Murphy jumper with 3:58 left in the quarter. The Jumbos led 21-17 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Banana Slugs gained their largest lead of the ballgame at 26-23, on an Ashlee Kowack layup with 5:04 left in the half. The Jumbos gained the lead for good, at 33-31,with 1:06 left in the half and led 35-31 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Jumbos finished on a 14-0 run to lead 63-42 at the end of the third quarter. The Jumbos gained their largest lead of the ballgame at twenty-eight at 75-47 on a Colby Shea jumper with 2:29 left that was the final scoring of the game.
Kowack had nineteen points for the Banana Slugs including 4-10 from three-point range. Murphy had 12 and Tess Oakley-Stillson added 11.
The Banana Slugs shot 33.3% from the field (18-54) and from the three point line (5-15) and were 50% (6-12) from the free throw line.
Molly Ryan had a game high twenty-one points for the Jumbos (8-1). Due to COVID-19 concerns, the next home game for the Banana Slugs, which was slated for Friday against Pacific Lutheran University, has been canceled. The next game for the Banana Slugs will be January 5
th as they take on Pomona-Pitzer at Kaiser Permanente Arena at 1 pm.
