CLAREMONT, Ca. – The UC Santa Cruz women's basketball team earned an 84-62 victory over the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers on Saturday afternoon. UC Santa Cruz was led by
Danielle Tyner who had a double double with 20 points and 14 rebounds while
Alyssa Jackson dropped 18 points with five three pointers.
Emilie Ngo and
Bria Tate also made key offensive contributions with 15 points and 12 points with Ngo dishing out seven assists while
Sarah Reuter was two points shy of a double double with eight points and 10 boards.
Jenna Gorton also played well in the contest with eight points, four rebounds, and two assists. UC Santa Cruz is now 9-10 on the year and will be back in action on January 13th when they travel to Simpson University at 5:30 p.m.
How It Happened
Cal Maritime opened the game on a 7-2 run but
Emilie Ngo,
Bria Tate,
Sarah Reuter, and
Alyssa Jackson worked to erase the deficit as the group combined for an 8-0 run, putting UCSC ahead 10-7 the run continued with a three from Jackson to put the team ahead 13-7 with 3:57 left in the first but the two teams traded attacks with UCSC coming away on top 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.
The Banana Slugs started the second quarter on a 13-5 run to take a 30-20 lead behind baskets from
Jenna Gorton,
Emilie Ngo, and
Danielle Tyner. Cal Maritime quickly responded with a 14-5 run to close out the quarter, cutting the lead to 35-34 at the halftime break.
UC Santa Cruz exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Keelhaulers 30-19 with
Alyssa Jackson hitting three threes and a jumper to lead the way with 11 points while Dnaielle Tyner added eight points with five rebounds. The Slugs got going out of the break with a 14-5 run that saw baskets from Tyner, Tate, and Jackson to put the team up by nine at 48-39. Cal Maritime responded with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 50-46 with 4:20 left in the third but UCSC was unphased as they closed out the quarter on a 15-7 run, extending their lead to 12 points at 65-53.
UC Santa Cruz didn't slow down in the fourth as they outscored Cal Maritime 19-9 in the final 10 minutes. The Banana Slugs torched the Keelhaulers with a 10-1 run right out of the gate in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 21 points at 75-54 with 4:18 left in the contest. Cal Maritime briefly interrupted the run with a layup, but UCSC rattled off seven unanswered points to go up 82-56. Cal Maritime was able to close out the game on a 6-2 run but it wouldn't be enough as UCSC earned the convincing 84-62 victory.
