Goals by Smith, Scott and Herm gives women's soccer fourth win in a row ahead of key roadtrip
UC Santa Cruz wore down Division II member Academy of Art, scoring three goals in a two-minute span of the second half in a 4-0 win on Tuesday afternoon.
The Banana Slugs improved to 6-7-2 with their fourth straight victory and ran their unbeaten streak to six games.
The first half was played on even terms with the score being goalless. UC Santa Cruz eventually broke through in the 56th minute. After Ainsley Smith's corner kick was partially cleared out, the Slugs' Alexia Santos recovered the ball and played it back out to Smith, who curled in a left-footed cross from outside the box to the top corner and put the hosts on the board. Various counters then happened in the back-and-forth game.
However, the Banana Slugs put the game away with an amazing sequence. In the 81st minute, Katie Herm made it 2-0 when her low shot from outside the box went under the Urban Knights' goalie. Before the crowd had time to breathe, defender Emily De Los Santos stole the ball after the restart and cut through the midfield to find fellow freshman Amanda Scott. Scott one-timed it from the edge of the box with a rainbow to the top that gave UCSC a second goal in less than ten seconds.
1:51 of clock time later, Scott completed scoring when Karina Bulli's pass sprung her one-one-one with the goalkeeper, who she rounded before coolly knocking it in from five yards for the game's fourth goal.
Overall, UC Santa Cruz had a 22-7 shot advantage. Goalkeepers Samantha Coelho and Alyssa Diaz-Tucker split time in goal, combining for three saves. The Banana Slugs held the Urban Knights without a shot on goal for the last 40 minutes to complete their fourth-straight shutout.
UC Santa Cruz hits the road for a key game Saturday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
