Banana Slugs Split on Day One of Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational

THOUSAND OAKS (9-7) – UC Santa Cruz started their trip to Southern California as they traveled to Thousand Oaks to take part in the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational hosted by California Lutheran University. The Banana Slugs fell 3-0 to University of Redlands and won 3-0 over Willamette University.

Match #1 – vs. University of Redlands

In the first set, the Banana Slugs would jump out to an 8-4 lead, the eighth point coming on a Maddie Fowler kill. The Banana Slugs would lead by four on three other occasions; the final occasion at 16-12 on an Alexandria Everett kill. The Bulldogs would go on a 7-2 run, capped by a service error by the Banana Slugs, to take the lead for good at 19-18. The Bulldogs won the first set 25-19. In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set on an 11-6 run capped by a service ace by Timolin Kepon. The Bulldogs would respond with a 7-1 run, capped by a Hannah Layton kill, to take the lead for good at 13-12. The Bulldogs won the second set 25-17. In the third set, the Banana Slugs jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs would respond with a 7-3 run, capped by a service error by the Banana Slugs, to take the lead for good at 8-7. The Bulldogs won the third set 25-11.

Claire Okerlund led Banana Slugs with eight kills.

Match #2 vs. Willamette

In the first set, the two teams would trade points for the first twelve serves. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good at 7-6 on an attack error by the Bearcats. The Banana Slugs would win the first set 25-18. In the second set, the Banana Slugs would take the lead for good at 5-4 on a service error by the Bearcats. The Banana Slugs would win the second set 25-22. In the third set, the Banana Slugs would start the set on an 8-3 run. The Banana Slugs would never relinquish the lead and would win the third set 25-23.

Okerlund had 16 kills on 36 attacks to lead the Banana Slugs. Shania Andrews had a team-high 16 digs to go with 7 kills.

The Banana Slugs will finish their time in Southern California as they will take on Chapman University Saturday at 10:30 am and Whitman College at 5 pm.
