
Jacks' First Half Goals beat Banana Slugs

ARCATA (10-20) – UC Santa Cruz fell 3-0 at Divsion II Humboldt State on Saturday morning.Â
The Banana Slugs (3-12) were outshot 15-9 by the Lumberjacks (5-9-1). The hosts scored their goals in the first 31 minutes, taking a 3-0 lead to the half. But the Banana Slugs shut them out the second half.
The Slugs had three good chances to break through on the scoreboard at the end of the first half. Joelle Steichen got the ball after a Humboldt State goal kick in the 38th minute but sent the shot wide left. Four minutes later,  Cayce Shaw had a shot that forced the Lumberjack goalie into a save. Shaw had a header with under two minutes left that was cleared off the line and Izel Gutierrez's rebound was saved by the goalie to allow the Lumberjacks to breathe a sigh of relief and end the half.
Goalkeeper Allie Mandel tied her season-high with 11 saves and tied former teammate Selina Davila-Olivera for 7th place on the school career save chart.
UCSC finishes their road trip Tuesday at UC Merced.
