CHICO - UC Santa Cruz absorbed an 18-4 shot differential in their 2-0 loss to Division II Chico State.
It was UC Santa Cruz's (3-10) fifth game against Division II opposition this season. The Wildcats (6-5) got a 2nd minute goal from Abbie Jones and one in the 15th minute from Brooke Coehlo, but were shut out the rest of the day by a resilient Banana Slug defense. Chico State's goals came on their first two shots of the game before UCSC settled down.
The Slugs' only shot on goal was in the 48th minute, but Julianne Hoeflich's header was saved. Cayce Shaw had a shot in the 73rd minute that was blocked.
Malia Starita had a career-high eight saves in the loss.
UCSC continues its four-game Division II adventure with a game at Stanislaus State on Sunday.
