Banana Slugs Sweep Cyclones

SANTA CRUZ (10-23) - UC Santa Cruz started their season ending three match homestand as they swept the Mills College Cyclones 3-0.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-0 to California Lutheran University on Saturday in Thousand Oaks while the Cyclones won 3-1 over West Coast Baptist College on Friday in Lancaster.

In the first set, the two teams traded points for the first four serves. From that point, the Banana Slugs went on a 11-0 run, capped by an Erica Allen kill, to give the Banana Slugs a 13-2 lead. The Cyclones would come as close as eight, at 13-5, but the Banana Slugs would then go on a 9-0 run, capped by a service ace by Amal Peermohammed, for a 22-5 lead. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead at eighteen, at set point, on a Shania Anderson kill. The Banana Slugs would win the first set 25-7 and took a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, the Cyclones would take their largest lead of the set at one on two occasions; the second occasion at 4-3 on a service ace by Myeisha Williams. From that point, the Banana Slugs would go on a 12-2 run, capped by a Hailey McDaniel kill, to give the Banana Slugs a 15-6 lead. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at fifteen, at set point, on a kill by Shania Andrews. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-10.

In the third set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 10-2 run capped by an Andrews kill. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at eighteen, at match point, on a service ace by Krysti Photias, to win the third set 25-7 and the match 3-0.

For UC Santa Cruz, Kallan Bedard had a match high seven kills and for Mills, Jamie Ziolkowski had two kills. Krysti Photias had a match high seventeen assists for UC Santa Cruz and Sydney Huddleston had three for Mills. Monica Lee led the Banana Slugs with nine digs and Emma Hohulin had a match high thirteen digs for the Cyclones.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .405 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .458 while Mills had a -.048 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .000. The Banana Slugs had thirty two more assists (37-5) than did the Cyclones.

The next match for the Banana Slugs will be Wednesday as they take on NAIA opponent Menlo College in Santa Cruz. The first serve is set for 7 pm.
