McMINNVILLE,OR - Goals by Jacob Myers Norys, Reed Miller, Ryan Nyberg and Rodrigo Diaz-Valdes helped UC Santa Cruz break a three-game losing streak in a 4-0 win at Linfield.
UCSC improved to 2-4. It was the Slugs' biggest road victory since a 3-0 shutout in September 2011, also at Linfield.
The Banana Slugs took a 1-0 lead when Miller got on the end of a cross from Dominique Royall in the 34th minute and -thinking quickly- lofted it over the goalkeeper.
Myers-Norys doubled the advantage 11 minutes after halftime and swung momentum in the game to the visitors.
The Wildcats (0-4-1) suffered when Isaac Archer was shown a red card in the 67th minute. From that point on UCSC had a 7-1 shot advantage. The Slugs eventually put the game away with two goals late. Nyberg stole the ball from the goalie in the 72nd and put it away to make it 3-0. Diaz-Valdes finished the scoring with a 28 yard free-kick five minutes later
Freshman Andrew Pimentel made his first career start and recorded four saves for the shutout. Overall, UCSC outshot their hosts 15-11 and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Banana Slugs return home before heading out to Texas for two games this weekend.
