ARCATA- Two Portland, Ore., schools gave the UC Santa Cruz women's basketball team more than it bargained for at the four-team Humboldt State Tournament, played Friday and Saturday. Saturday afternoon, the Banana Slugs lost in the consolation final to Columbia Christian, 59-47. Guard Vicki Priuska led UCSC with 16 points. The Slugs were down 32-28 at the half, but a third quarter burst by Columbia made the difference.
"They hurt us with their press (defense)," said UCSC Coach Brock Tulley. "They did a good job with that, and they were beating us to the ball. They outhustled us."
Friday, Warner Pacific beat the Slugs in the opening round, 87-38. Shana Margolis led UCSC with 12 points.
