Shorthanded Banana Slugs hold off Holy Names in 2-1 win

SANTA CRUZ, Cali - A pair of first half goals by Jacob Myers Norys and stellar second half defending gave UC Santa Cruz a 2-1 win over Division II Holy Names Thursday afternoon.
UCSC improves to 3-7-1 and broke a four-game non-winning streak. Holy Names, coached by former Slug David Frank, fell to 0-8-1.
Playing at home for the first time in a month, UCSC weathered an early barrage from their opponents before establishing their game against the third Division II opponent they've faced in the past week.
UCSC got a momentum boost with the introduction of substitutes Myers Norys and Ryan Nyberg. They got on the board five minutes later when a streaking Hector Mestre came down the left flank and passed to Myers Norys, who turned to shake his defender enough to left out a shot that went past the Hawk keeper's hand into the top of the net for the early 1-0 lead. The lead was doubled two minutes later when Myers Norys combined with Sam Horton on a give and go with Myers Norys finishing with a sliding shot at the far post.
The second half began with teams even and back-and-forth play. The Slugs were reduced to ten men however when Landen Gozashti was sent off for a hard tackle. On the ensuing free-kick, the Hawks' Yohannes Harish put away the ball after a scramble in the box to make it 2-1.
Despite the shock goal, the Slugs weathered for the last 19 minutes. A minute later, Harish again got free and put a header on frame that Andrew Pimentel got enough of a hand on to force it out for a corner.
The Slugs cleared out a last-minute Holy Names corner, and ran out the clock to gain the victory over their old rivals. UCSC had 15-13 shot advantage and 5-4 corner kick advantage. The game featured 29 fouls, ten committed by the Slugs.
UCSC next plays Sunday morning against Carthage College at the Lower East Field
